Why is my WordPress website so slow?

Why is my WordPress website so slow?

A slow WordPress website is one of the most common complaints from small business owners — and it nearly always comes down to one or more of these causes.

Poor quality hosting

The most common culprit. Cheap shared hosting puts your site on an overcrowded server with thousands of others, starving it of resources. When other sites on that server get busy, yours slows down. You have no control over it, and no visibility into it.

Moving to managed WordPress hosting on dedicated infrastructure is the single biggest speed improvement for most slow sites.

Unoptimised images

Large image files that haven’t been compressed for the web significantly slow page load times. A single hero image at 4MB can add 3–4 seconds on its own. Plugins like Imagify or ShortPixel automate compression.

No caching

Without caching, WordPress rebuilds every page from scratch on every request — querying the database, running PHP, assembling the HTML, every time. With server-level caching, visitors get a pre-built version delivered instantly.

Too many plugins

Every active plugin adds overhead. Audit your plugin list and remove anything that isn’t actively needed.

Outdated PHP version

Running PHP 7.x instead of 8.x means missing significant performance improvements. PHP 8.x runs WordPress noticeably faster.

Database bloat

Old post revisions, spam comments, and leftover data from deleted plugins slow database queries over time.

Google’s PageSpeed Insights will show you exactly what’s causing your site’s slow speed. At WordPress Hosting Agency, switching to our managed hosting infrastructure is often the fastest and most dramatic fix. See our plans or get in touch.
